Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a day of love and passion. It's when admires and couples get together and get each other gifts, make dinner, have sweet love etc. We cherish love today but back then love was illegal.

Centuries ago a Christian priest named Valentine was executed. Researchers approximated that he was killed for disobeying a law that stated Roman soldiers weren't allowed to get married because they supposedly fight better without ties. They also said Valentine fell for the jailer's daughter and sent her a  letter signed " from your Valentine." Later on his church made Feb.14 Valentine's day so they could change a holiday that praised Juno( Roman Goddess) and Lupercalia( boys would draw names from jar to determine their female partners).

Christian's didn't agree of marriage as this quote from an authority said," no one disapproves when a gentle and honest sentiment softens the bonds of marriage, but it is not the role of marriage to inspire such a feeling. Similarly, it was not the role of such tender feelings to inspire marriage." I included this quote to show how  love was supposed to be inspired by feelings towards another  and how different it was back then.

When I read this article it showed my how much freedom and change we earned over past 1000 years. Today Valentine's day is about showing how much love and appreciate your partner. You by them gifts, cook and etc. Marriage has significantly changed, you can marry for love instead of it being arranged. But divorce rates are increasing because to much is expecting from one another. One person wants this while another wants that and both people can't satisfy each other.

In conclusion I one day hope to settle down and get married to a woman I love, have kids and live in a dream house. This article (Historically Incorrect Canoodling, New York Times) really makes you appreciate love instead of think it as an joke.

Gun Control Debate

The Sandy Hook massacre in which Adam Lanza murdered 20 children and 6 adults. It was declared the second-worst shooting in American history and started a debate on gun control laws. President Obama has made gun control  one the top priorities of the country.

Obama gave a speech afterwards which said "No single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society.

Gun control has been an issue that dates back to 1791 which allowed military to wield guns. Then in 2008 The Second Amendment stated that any individual is allowed to bear arms.

In 1968, after the deaths of Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kelly a gun control law was issued that  prevented guns from being mail-ordered. Then in 1994 a law was passed that made everyone who bought a gun was to have complete background check and banned 18 semiautomatic rifles including the infamous AR-15.

Over the years the AR-15 has become a prevalent weapon among Americans. It was used by Adam in the Sandy Hook tragedy and in the Aurora, Colorado shooting (which killed 12 people and wounded 50).

But the N.R.A (National Rifle Association) say if guns are taken away then it will be harder for citizens to defend themselves. Scott Ostrosky, a gun range owner, said "A gun didn't kill all those children. A disturbed man killed all those children."

Ladd Everitt a member of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence said " We've allowed this kind of carnage to happen through our inaction".

In conclusion gun control has become a serious issue with killings of the past few years. I agree that the government haven't been on top of gun control like they should have but their not all to blame. Their are people out there that are amiable and have a clean record, but secretly is a murderous psychopath. I think the government should question people personally instead of relying on computer records. Also people should be limited to two guns because the more guns, the more problems. Finally to those people who think guns are bad, yes a gun take multiple lives, but can save even more lives so stop COMPLAINING.

Minorities to Majority

For years the white population have made up most of the U.S population ( 63 percent). While races like Latino, Blacks and Asian have make an combined 30 percent. But the Census Bureau by 2042 minorities will outnumber the whites.

Several key factors have contributed to this shift. First the 1965 Immigration Act which  offered sanctuary immigrants from countries like Mexico, China, India and the Philippines. Second , non-whites birth rates are higher than whites. Lastly mixed-race relationships are increasing causing more mixed children to be born.

Marcelo Suarez-Orozco said "the question is whether a cohesive society is still possible when the generations don't look like one another.

Immigration has also caught the eye of politicians causing them to show great concern on the rising rate, especially on Latinos. The Democrats have been supporting the act and it showed when 12.5 million out of 24 million Hispanic's voted for Obama which greatly helped him become president in 2008.

But everyone didn't support the Immigration Act because form 2010-11 over 150 anti-immigration laws were passed. Also there have been efforts to make English the official language of the U.S.

The Census Bureau said by 2050 the Hispanic's will be second greatest population.

In conclusion I welcome the fact that the population is growing. Hispanics, Blacks, Chinese etc. I always felt like their were to many white people especially in office. It felt like other races didn't have enough say because there weren't a lot of us. Every race is special and contributes something different  to our everyday lives. Now some people think since a Black president got elected that were going get special privilege's. But everyone is equal no matter how much money you make or how important your  job is. That's the attitude everyone should have instead of stereotyping people on what they think they know. Is that to much to ask for!!!
